A seven day charrette was held in Midtown Hattiesburg between Friday Nov 4th and Thursday Nov 10th, 2011.
A “charrette” is a multiple day, collaborative planning and design workshop. Charrettes are inclusive by nature and are designed to build consensus from the outset, providing a collaborative forum to bring all parties together and focus on a common goal. The hands-on nature of the charrette, the opportunity to interact with differing perspectives, and the short feedback loops allow issues to be identified and resolved early on in the process. In addition, the charrette provides an educational opportunity for all participants. The charrette process not only produces invaluable information for the consultant team but it enables the community to realize how much consensus exists for key issues in a constructive format. Ultimately, stakeholder involvement and ownership will make the adoption and implementation of the plan far more feasible. Below are some of the illustrations produced during the charrette.

The cottages look great and have potential as a good idea. I hope they are not University-exclusive residences. The 49 & Hardy and Hardy & USM Gateway watercolors look good. I hope that in this project though, there are some efforts to make the area between 49 and Hardy more bike-friendly. Lastly, I have heard tales of a possible upscale hotel deal to be a part of this development. I think the city should take such opportunity to bring in a nice hotel chain to complement this development. We need a nice hotel near the University!

It is beautiful!!!!
I stumbled across this, and really hope that it does become a reality!
It could definitely attract more students to USM (we love things to do that are close!!!) and help the city grow and keep people from the area.
I will definitely be keeping an eye on y’alls website!

As a long time property owner just across 49, I would like to see this cross over to the 49 (East Side) service road and South and North 25th. These areas are highly visible to the University and ‘passing’ traffic. The area South of Walgreens where would be a great place for the
hotel possiblity mentioned. When I purchased property on the 3rd block of South 25th and had it re-zoned, the Cities plan was to make 25th North and South “Professional”.. I would like to see this. If you travel this street you know that many houses are rental now and are not very appealing. Please contact Midtown and Parkhaven with your ideas for having this “Midtown” plan cross over 49.. Thanks! Darlene Thomas long time landowner, Historic District, Parkhaven.

I do not think I will live long enough to see Midtown at it’s completion, however, the ideas are headed in the right direction. The illustrations are nice. It is all too compact for me. I would love to know who designed the cottages and the cost of one. They would look good at the edge of uptown H’burg.
