On Thursday, November 10 at 6pm, approximately 60 people convened at the The Thad Cochran Center to watch the closing presentation of the charrette. The team presented a summary of the week’s events, which included illustrative drawings, before and after computer visualizations and an physical master plan. After the presentation, participants were encouraged to review the plans and offer further suggestions on draft concepts, which were on display throughout the room.

I am very excited about learning of the possibility of a Mid-town revitalization in Hattiesburg. As someone who plans to retire in the next 5-8 years, I would love to be able to find an affordable apartment/patio home/townhouse in that area. On my last visit to Hattiesburg I looked into this and unfortunately the options were less than satisfactory. The apartment buildings were old, did not have amenities i.e. washer and dryer hook-ups, no elevators, etc.
Also the intersection of 49 and Hardy streets presents a barrier (at least it seems to me) for older people. It feels dangerous to try to cross. I want my future life to be integrated into the University — with the Payne Center recreational opportunities, the library, the Center for Learning in Retirement plus all of the programs offered by the the University throughout the year.
Public transportation is also very important…and is one amenity Hattiesburg does currently have, IF you can find a decent place to live within walking distance of the bus stops.
Please keep me informed of this project as it goes forward. I wish you all success!
